He said: “Have we gotten heaven all wrong?” about…Christian notion of heaven.

“N.T. Wright asks: Have we gotten heaven all wrong?”

The oft-cliched Christian notion of heaven — a blissful realm of harp-strumming angels — has remained a fixture of the faith for centuries. Even as arguments will go on as to who will or won’t be “saved,” surveys show that a vast majority Americans believe that after death their souls will ascend to some kind of celestial resting place.

But scholars on the right and left increasingly say that comforting belief in an afterlife has no basis in the Bible and would have sounded bizarre to Jesus and his early followers. Like modern curators patiently restoring an ancient fresco, scholars have plumbed the New Testament’s Jewish roots to challenge the pervasive cultural belief in an otherworldly paradise.

The most recent expert to add his voice to this chorus is the prolific Christian apologist N.T. Wright, a former Anglican bishop who now teaches about early Christianity and New Testament at Scotland’s University of St. Andrews. Wright has explored Christian misconceptions about heaven in previous books, but now devotes an entire volume, “How God Became King: The Forgotten Story of the Gospels,” to this trendy subject.

Wright’s insistence that Christianity has got it all wrong seems to mark a turning point for the serious rethinking of heaven. He’s not just another academic iconoclast bent on debunking Christian myths. Wright takes his creeds very seriously and has even written an 800-plus-page megaton study setting out to prove the historical truth of the resurrection of Jesus.

The advice is: “Wherever the spirit of doubt lingers, let it be known that its triplet is not far behind.”

“Prayer against Subtlety of the Devil”

“And He (JESUS) spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint…Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ…” (Luke 18:1, Ephesians 4:14)

There is great cry in the heavenlies to summon the church to pray for the gift of discerning of spirits to be activated in the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is a subtle spirit of tiredness to fight off the buzzards that have come to eat up the sacrifice and covenant that we have been taught in Holy Scriptures. That spirit had been uncovered by the Holy Ghost as the spirit of doubt. Wherever the spirit of doubt lingers, let it be known that its triplet is not far behind. The other two culprits are the spirit of fear and lies. This threesome is the primary trait of the devil and Satan himself. That spirit has being meandering through the body of Christ for it to question the apostolic doctrine, holiness standards, separation from worldliness; to a spirit of lethargy, tolerance and amalgamation.

There is a vacuum pull from the right to bordering on the side of complacency. This nauseating spirit is saying, “Christendom at large is doing it, so why can’t we just go with flow. Don’t trouble the waters or bring any attention to ourselves and this doctrine. Let us be this one happy family. It’s one god, one world and one church, right? Why do you have to be different?” This is a spirit of error and that of the Antichrist! It must be rebuked forthwith, and never be able to prosper amongst the people of God! Cain murdered his brother; Esau walked away from his birthright; King Saul, his soul; Demas lost his soul…all these along with millions have been led astray because of this wicked and evil spirit.

The devil is on a rampage to belittle our “policy and procedures” i.e., the Bible. Any strong and well-balanced organization has strong policy and procedures, some iron clad by certified quality management, with strict adherence to code, strict adherence to corporate governance, and strict adherence to all relevant business laws.

As a manner of fact, some companies adopt a cult like culture that one can identify them based on their dress, attitude, behavior and affiliations. Their strict way of doing business is spilled over in their personal lives with relative ease. Some workers even convinced their families to move into that area where the culture is being developed.

The church of Jesus Christ also has a culture, mannerism, creed, statutes, customs, laws and commandments that God has set for His church. And the church must not feel like a second class citizen to any wiles that the devil is casting at her. Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail again it. The scriptures warn strongly against adding or subtracting from its laws, see Revelation 22:19. Blessings and cursings are spelt out for those who dare to tread on it tenets.

We will not allow the devil to bully us out of our inheritance. The time is too short and the stakes are too high for us to start rethinking the doctrine and core principles that the Lord has set for this church. Pray against the subtlety of the devil.
